This guide helps you navigate the market honestly — what each oil type offers, which is best for your specific cooking needs, and how to identify the real thing.
Cold Pressed Mustard Oil: The King of Eastern Indian Cooking
Best for: Bengali, Odia, Punjabi, and Kashmiri cuisine. Pickling. Fish preparation. Flavour-forward tadkas.
Smoke point: 250 degrees Celsius — the highest among cold pressed oils commonly available in India.
Flavour: pungent, warm, distinctive.
Nutrition highlights: high in omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid), allyl isothiocyanate (antimicrobial), Vitamin E.
Price range for genuine kachi ghani: Rs. 200-360 per litre.
Watch out for: pale colour (indicates refining or blending), no characteristic smell (the oil should smell strongly of mustard).
Cold Pressed Coconut Oil: The Heart of South Indian Cooking
Best for: Kerala, Karnataka, and coastal cooking. Medium-heat cooking. Hair and skin application. Baking.
Smoke point: 177 degrees Celsius (lower than other options — not ideal for high-heat frying).
Flavour: mild coconut, slightly sweet. Nutrition highlights: 50% lauric acid (antimicrobial, supports HDL cholesterol), Vitamin E, natural antioxidants.
Solidifies below 24 degrees Celsius — this is completely normal for genuine cold pressed coconut oil.
Price range: Rs. 300-550 per litre.
Watch out for: oil that never solidifies (indicates refining or adulteration), no coconut aroma.
Cold Pressed Sunflower Oil: The Everyday Neutral Option
Best for: baking, salad dressings, and dishes where neutral oil flavour is preferred.
Smoke point: 225-232 degrees Celsius for cold pressed.
Flavour: very mild, slightly nutty.
Nutrition highlights: high in Vitamin E (approximately 41mg per 100ml — highest among Indian cold pressed oils), linoleic acid (omega-6).
Price range: Rs. 180-280 per litre.
Limitation: very high omega-6 content — ideal for those who do not consume other high-omega-6 oils, but not recommended as the sole cooking oil for high-volume consumers.
Cold Pressed Groundnut Oil: The Most Versatile Option
Best for: Gujarati, Andhra, and Maharashtra cooking. High-heat applications. Everyday all-purpose use.
Smoke point: 232 degrees Celsius — the highest among cold pressed options after mustard.
Flavour: mild, warm, nutty. Nutrition highlights: 48% monounsaturated fat (same family as olive oil), resveratrol, phytosterols, Vitamin E.
Price range: Rs. 250-400 per 500ml.
Best choice for: households that want a single cold pressed oil for all cooking purposes — it handles the widest range of cooking styles.
Cold Pressed Sesame Oil: The Secret Ingredient
Best for: South Indian tempering, finishing drizzle on Korean-inspired dishes, specific Rajasthani preparations.
Smoke point: 177 degrees Celsius — not for high-heat cooking.
Flavour: strong, distinctive, nutty-sweet.
Nutrition highlights: sesamol and sesamin (unique antioxidants with documented anti-inflammatory properties), natural lignans that support hormone balance.
Note: cold pressed sesame oil is a flavour oil — use it as a finishing element or in low-heat cooking, not as a primary cooking oil.
How to Spot Adulterated Cold Pressed Oil
Price check: if a cold pressed oil is priced at or below refined oil prices, it is almost certainly not genuine. The lower yield of cold pressing means the cost is fundamentally higher.
Colour check: each oil has a characteristic natural colour. Colourless, transparent cold pressed oil (except possibly sesame) is a red flag.
Smell check: genuine cold pressed oil smells of its seed source. Open the bottle before buying if possible.
Sediment check: natural sediment at the bottom is a positive sign, not a quality defect.
Certification check: look for FSSAI number on the label — this does not guarantee quality but its absence is a warning sign.
The GreenDumbells Oil Range
GreenDumbells currently offers wood pressed mustard oil, cold pressed coconut oil, cold pressed sunflower oil, and cold pressed groundnut oil — all extracted without chemical solvents, all packed in dark glass or food-grade dark PET to protect against light-induced oxidation, all batch-tested for purity. We price our oils honestly — we do not compete with refined oil prices because that would mean compromising the process that makes cold pressed oil worth buying.
