The GreenDumbells Story:
From Odisha Farms
to Your Kitchen

📅 July 11, 2026 ⏱ 6 min read ✍️ GreenDumbells Team
GreenDumbells Organics was started in Bhubaneswar, Odisha — not in a startup incubator, not with investor funding — but from a genuinely personal frustration with what had happened to Indian food. The processed versions of things that used to be pure. The refined oil in place of kachi ghani. The bleached white jaggery in place of the dark, mineral-rich block from the local market. The branded oats loaded with sugar masquerading as health food.
GreenDumbells Odisha Farming Success Story FMCG

Every brand has an origin story. Many of them are polished, sanitised versions of what actually happened. This is the real one.

The Problem That Started Everything

When Manan Sahni started researching what was actually in the packaged foods his family was eating daily, what he found was unsettling. The cooking oil labelled as pure mustard oil was solvent-extracted and deodorised. The jaggery in the supermarket was treated with sulphur dioxide for colour. The oats in their fancy packaging had added sugar in the second ingredient position. The alternative — genuinely pure, traditionally made versions of these foods — was available. But finding them required knowing the right local supplier, visiting the right kirana, knowing who to trust. It was not accessible to the urban family that had moved away from the local market ecosystem. That gap between what Indian families deserve to eat and what the market easily offers — that is the gap GreenDumbells exists to close.

Why Odisha

Odisha is not an obvious location for an organic food brand. It does not have the startup culture of Bangalore or the consumer market of Mumbai. But it has something more fundamental: proximity to genuine agricultural traditions that have not been completely industrialised. The sesame farmers of Bolangir, the jaggery producers of Bargarh, the mustard fields of coastal Odisha — these communities still use traditional methods because those methods are what they know. Working with these communities meant GreenDumbells could trace every product to its origin. It also meant supporting rural livelihoods directly, without multiple layers of intermediary. When you buy GreenDumbells wood pressed mustard oil, the economic benefit reaches the mustard farmer, the kachi ghani operator, and the packaging worker — not primarily the middleman.

Building to Rs. 1 Crore Offline Before Going Online

GreenDumbells built its first crore of revenue entirely offline — through retail partnerships, word of mouth, and direct delivery to households in and around Bhubaneswar. That offline success was proof of the product, not the marketing. Customers came back. They referred their neighbours. Stores that stocked the products reported consistent repeat purchase rates. The decision to build the digital channel came from one observation: the customers who loved the products most were the hardest to reach. Urban families in other cities, NRI households missing the taste of traditional Indian food, health-conscious consumers who had been looking for exactly what GreenDumbells offered but could not find it on a shelf near them. The internet removes that geographic barrier.

What Zero Chemicals Actually Means

GreenDumbells uses this claim carefully because it is specific and verifiable. Zero chemicals means: our oils are extracted by mechanical cold pressing only — no hexane, no chemical solvents at any stage. Our jaggery is sulphur-free — no sulphur dioxide treatment for whitening or preservation. Our products contain no artificial preservatives, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours. Our packaging is food-grade and tested. We do not use the word ‘organic’ loosely — where we claim organic certification, we have it. Where we claim natural, we mean it in the literal sense: the product is what the ingredient was.

What Comes Next

The Rs. 50 Lakh online revenue target is not the real goal. The real goal is to be the brand that a million Indian families trust for the basics — the cooking oil, the sweetener, the breakfast grain, the salt. The products that appear at every meal, that are used every day, that are passed from the parent’s kitchen to the child’s. Trust at that level is earned slowly, with consistency and honesty. If you have bought from GreenDumbells and found it to be what it claims to be — pure, traditional, honestly made — please tell someone. That referral is worth more to a brand like ours than any advertisement. And if you have a question about any product, an ingredient, or our sourcing — ask us. We believe you have the right to know exactly what you are putting in your family’s food.
